Change the layout of the homepage

TracyAU Aug 2, 2011 11:28 PM

Hi Tanner,

I need to change the layout of the home page. Currently there are 4 text areas. I would like to make it only 2 wider areas.

Would you kindly explain how this is done? It may be helpful information in general when applying new 'components'? to a page.

Thanks,

Tracy

Hi Tracy,

Page layout and structure is a slightly larger topic to cover and will be best to do in our next meeting. However, I can see the need for switching to two columns over the 4 and will give the short version below. If you would like me to switch this for you now until we can properly demonstrate it to the group, let me know.

The layout of a page is is dictated by the template associated with the page. To select a different template click on "Edit Page" in the admin bar. I've added a new template that will allow for only two wider columns in the home page middle section. Its name is "Home Page Template Two Wide Columns".

You can change the template by hitting the "All" button on the right of the Template field. Once you have done this, you will now see our current template possibilities. If you click on "3 Home Page Template Two Wide Columns" the template for this page will be changed the next time you refresh the page. Templates are setup by Lex and myself as is needed. This one will need some tweaking still.

Templates hold the position and structure of locations. Locations are the areas where you can add or remove components. A visual indication of a location can be seen if you have "Show Tools" selected in the admin bar and hover over it. By clicking on the link icon that appears as a result of hovering. You will load the component interface and be able to modify what loads to this location.

Hi Tracy,

As you may notice your home page is now running off of a two column layout. It will still need some tweaks done to the styling before it is all the way there. However, I would see if you can get your content to fit to its current height. Much more space added there will push the lowest row out of sight on most user's window.

Hope this will get you going for now.

Tanner
