Can't keep a connection via 56k to CR1000 (Wavecom)

ChrisL Feb 26, 2011 05:35 PM

Hi,

Been having trouble connecting to my CR1000 over GSM.

I have three options for modem:
1) Old HP fax modem which is recognized by windows
2) Zoom USB 56k fax modem
3) Some cheap USB modem from ebay

I would guess most of these are connexant chipsets but I really have no idea.

With the Zoom, I can dial the logger and it will connect, however after 5 seconds the connection is dropped and I get the error "Carrier Detect is down".

The line I am dialling from has ADSL, however I wouldn't have thought that is the problem as the phone works fine, and this generally isn't a problem.

Thank you!

p.s. Dialling from loggernet- have tried both TAPI and CSI options on all modems.

Do you have the relevant ADSL filter on the telephone line that you are connecting the modem to? Is there other noise on the telephone line? You can check this with a normal handset.

When you dial with an analogue modem to a GSM modem like this you need to remember that neither the Wavecom nor logger have much to do with the connection initially. This is because your base modem has to connect to another analogue modem owned by the cellnet provider, which is a gateway into a digital network.

With most interface hardware the datalogger can force the termination of a call though which it might do if it detects bad data which could happen the Wavecom modem is setup to run at an incompatible baud rate. Other issues could be that it has a low or failing battery.

Andrew,

Thanks for your reply- of course you are right that it must be between me and my local exchange. I had forgotten that the PSTN is now digital!

I actually managed to dial in finally an hour ago using the cheap modem from eBay, which is a multitech branded one.

I wonder if I had the wrong dial sequence for the other modems.

Odd- I had thought everything would work correctly, however when I try to send a new program to the logger the connection gets broken. This is the error I'm getting:

Any ideas? It normally stays connected fine, until I try to upload a new file. The upload goes OK but then it hangs afterwards.
