Satellite visibility test?

wilbarger Aug 30, 2010 10:51 PM

Hi all, I'm working on a weather station that would transmit data to the GOES satellite, but the location is in a pretty deep valley with mountains to the south where we'd need to aim the antenna to hit the satellite. We have the elavation and azimuth for the satellite based on the GPS coordinates of the location, and it looks like they hit just the very edge of the mountain ridge. Is there a way to determine in the field whether we'll get GOES satellite reception, without hauling the tranmsitter and antenna out there? Something that works the way a GPS unit displayes GPS satellite reception?
I'm a little lost on this - any ideas are appreciated.
Thanks,
wilbarger

I use a program called Microdem when I'm concerned about radio line of sight issues. You could get a data set of the area in question and might be able to use the LOS (line of sight) tool somehow to see if you'll clear the rim of the canyon.
